24.08.2021. Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) is a major representative of 20th century sculpture who developed modernism into a personal universe of her own, close to abstract art and strongly inspired by nature.
In 1954, one of her close friends sent her a large shipment of scented Bosse (Guarea), which she used for several sculptures made after a journey to Greece.

In 'Corinthos', carved from a single piece of Bosse, she tunnelled through the wood in a double spiralling shape; the white interior provides a sensuous contrast to the polished brown surface of the cylindrical exterior.

In other sculptures, such as ‘Two Forms with White (Greek)’, she used the grain of Bosse to emphasise verticality, incorporating the curved horizon of the sea through white concavities.
Bosse embodies the artist's sensitive and fascinating universe, a true alchemy between landscape, inner world and material.
