14.02.2022. INTERHOLCO brought tropical forests to Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech (University of Liège) on the occasion of Gembloux JobDAY. Last 18 November, the not-to-be-missed event brought together more than 200 forest management students, some of whom freshly graduated in forestry, agronomy and environment, returning for the first time after the 2020 pause.

The ideal chance for Patrick Gaincko, Manager of People and Organization at INTERHOLCO, to meet and greet more than 50 of them and find out about their interest in Central Africa.

Today, a bioengineer aspires to become a real contribu(ac)tor to responsible forest management, making the most of ecosystem goods and services for the benefit of all, especially local populations. ‘I have a dream,' says Sandy Manfroy, a young bioengineer, freshly graduated from the Master in Agronomic Sciences at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech. ‘That is, to respond to the major global challenges of our times: deforestation, biodiversity erosion, climate change... I feel strongly concerned’. The solution to these challenges lies in protecting and giving value to the forests of the Congo Basin, the world’s second largest tropical forests in size and now the largest in terms of CO2 absorption capacity.

The vital role of Central Africa's forests is making headlines. It is little wonder that, only a few days after the end of the 26th United Nations Climate conference known as COP26, students showing up at Gembloux JobDAY were increasingly eager to do something for the planet. ‘A bioengineer trained at Gembloux is someone who wants to be versatile,' explains Sandy Manfroy. Hence the importance for INTERHOLCO, which , to increasingly go out and meet bioengineers.

But why exactly would they want to join a forestry company that is a leader in the harvesting, processing and sale of high-quality wood products? Products from responsibly managed forests in the North of the Republic of Congo, certified according to the principles and criteria of the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council®, FSC® C022952)? ‘Joining an FSC-certified company such as INTERHOLCO,' highlights Sandy Manfroy, 'allows us to bring together the human aspect with its social side, the environment, biodiversity, ecology...'. FSC principles, the most demanding currently available, ensure that forests remain forests. For people, fauna, flora, through rainfall generation, carbon absorption, climate mitigation, securing our health and, in short, our survival on this planet.

In an FSC-certified company, industrial constraints, socio-cultural and socio-economic contexts and environmental protection are all intertwined. A trip abroad, with its change of scenery, makes it possible to understand the reality on the ground. Joining INTERHOLCO means doing one’s part for responsible management, with professionals who are passionate about the work they do, some of whom were trained at Gembloux, as well.

According to Patrick Gaincko, 'Many young women have come to submit their CVs. We are keen to listen to all applicants, in an ‘equal opportunities’ dynamic aimed at making it possible to attract, develop, promote, and, above all, retain, talent.
